VR Researchers: Panel of Experts

Educators in VR Researchers

Limited spots available (40), be on time!

This event will be an expert panel considering research in/about VR. The experts in the panel are; Sam Reno, Géraldine Perriguey, Anthony Chaston PhD and Evelien Ydo who all have presented for the research track before (biographies below, see the EDVR YouTube channel for their previous presentations). The event will be highly interactive, where the audience is welcomed to introduce topics and questions for the panel to discuss. At the end of the event there will be some time to network as well.

The Educators in VR Research Team features researchers from across the spectrum of VR/AR/XR research and development, coming together to share their knowledge, techniques, and research and learn from each other. Join us to discuss the possibilities and potential of research in VR. We host regular meetups and workshops for discussion and learning.

Sam Reno is a PhD candidate in the School of Education at Drake University and the program manager of performance improvement at MidAmerican Energy, both located in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Sam has partnered with industry vendors to develop VR and AR applications for workplace learning activities and work performance. Sam is currently developing his dissertation topic on industrial applications of XR and work performance. Sam serves on the core leadership team of the North American Transmission Forum Human Performance Practices Group. Sam holds a Master’s degree in Adult Learning and Organizational Performance and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology. Sam is also a member of the Educators in VR - VR Researchers Team, and has two cats.

Anthony Chaston PhD. When not in Altspace, Anthony is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, at Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada. His research area is Visual Perception, and more specifically, perception of spaces in VR. He teaches University courses in the areas of Perception and Research Design. Anthony is currently developing a new course for our Psychology program called: The Digital Frontier: Perception, Virtual Reality, and AI in Psychology. This course will be delivered in Altspace. He has a small working group for that project and he and his colleagues will be conducting research while they implement the new course. His other research involves developing and testing VR 360 videos for use in VR Nature Therapy. He is investigating the potential for nature scenes, presented in VR, to be used for stress & anxiety reduction. Anthony’s PhD is in Experimental Psych.

Géraldine Perriguey is the CEO and Founder of XR Pedagogy. Serial entrepreneur for the last 8 years, she is creative person with a leader spirit attracted by innovation and Research. Geraldine started as a Scientist in drug design and biomedical sciences, then her passion for new technologies brought her to study digital marketing and graduated an MBA. In 2015 after discovering the field of design thinking during a trip in Holland, she built an agency to encourage patient-centricity using the design thinking methodology. Few years later, she volunteered to an experience using XR and felt in love with this new media. She graduated a university degree at the University of Paris Descartes: Virtual reality applied to Psychology, with the highest honored for her project "Study of denial of Hurricane risk using a VR-Based training". Project she developed her self, using Unity3D. Géraldine is convinced that XR is an art and a creative science where students will learn to become better than us to solve complex problems.

Evelien Ydo is a research specialist in virtual reality, exploring human factors, learning psychology, and presentation and conversational skills. She has a bachelor of science in Psychology. Furthermore, she is finishing her masters of Educational Science and Technology degree with research in Assessment of VR training for Technical Vocational Education. She is researching how to collect, interpret and process data collected out of VR training to get valid performance results. She also worked on a research project on training presentation skills and providing feedback in VR for the Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching (TELT) team of the University of Twente. Furthermore, as the team project leader of the research track she is and seeking out all researchers to connect and share their research techniques, technologies, challenges, inspire each other and work together.
