3D Biochemistry / AR in Classrooms
2020 Educators in VR International Summit
Session: 3D Biochemistry / AR in Classrooms
2020 Educators in VR International Summit brings together educators, learners, researchers, and experts in VR, AR, and XR to share their their passion for integrating immersive technology in education.
First Presentation
Track: Medical and Science
Using 3D Modeling to Teach Biochemistry
Joe Laureanti, Staff Scientist
Chemist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Virtual Reality and 3D modeling takes traditional textbook lessons off the page into fully immersive and interactive virtual worlds.Scientist Joe Laureanti is part of a team designing and developing UnityMol, a virtual reality program for viewing and manipulating small molecules, molecular orbitals, proteins, and artificial metalloenzymes. The tools within UnityMol are being used to gain a basic understanding of reaction mechanisms as they apply to artificial metalloenzymes that are designed for energy relevant chemical transformations. UnityMol provides a great platform to directly calculate and visualize electrostatic properties, as well as many other properties. This is just one of the many ways VR can be used to teach and explore biochemical reactions and systems.
Joe Laureanti is a bioinorganic chemist focused on designing and assembling artificial metalloenzymes for energy relevant chemical transformations. Also focus on implementing tools for producing and visualizing electrostatic components of protein systems in a virtual environment.
Second Presentation
Track: Down to Basics
Integrating Augmented Reality into the Classroom
Steve Grubbs, Founder of VictoryXR
Steve Grubbs will explore the integration of augmented reality into classrooms through the existing use of phone and tablets and Hololens and prepare for the next generation of low form factor glasses.
Steve is the founder of VictoryXR. Prior to this bout of entrepreneurship, Steve served in the Iowa Legislature, with four years as Chairman of the House Education Committee. He grew up in the home of an educator and has also served as adjunct faculty for St. Ambrose University. Steve has degrees in business and law from the University of Iowa.
