Sonya Haskins: VR Gaming and VR eSports

Sonya will define these terms that describe a combination of technology and physicality, discuss physical and emotional benefits, and talk about how to incorporate VR gaming / esports into school programs with STEM funding.

Sonya is a respected voice and journalist with a focus on virtual reality. She is the VR Esports Editor at VR Fitness Insider and has been interviewed for Intel and the Washington Post, among other publications. She was the first seated player in the VR League and the first female player to advance to regionals in North America.

Throughout her experience as a professional player, Sonya saw a need for increased media coverage of VR-related topics so she began using her professional skills as a writer and speaker to promote players, developers, and others involved with the industry. Sonya encourages the growth of positive, inclusive social environments and she started VR Community Builders, LLC, a community-driven platform focused on outreach. She believes the technology can have positive impacts on healthcare, education, mental health, business and every other aspect of our lives.

Sonya has written 8 books and lives in Northeast Tennessee.

Educators in VR Weekly Workshops presents workshops and special events to help educators, learners, researchers, and enthusiasts with a desire to integrate VR, AR, XR, and MR into the classroom and education.

Educators in VR offers weekly workshops on VR/AR/XR basics, immersive classrooms, vlanguage learning, diversity and access, vcoaching and personal development, how to teach and present in VR, and other programs to help you include VR in the classroom as an educational tool, homework, or creating an educational VR lab in your school.

AltspaceVR is a free and open social VR platform, an excellent virtual space for hosting educational events and creating immersive classroom experiences. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of setting up an event and considerations AltspaceVR for education, including public, private, and paid.
